Illegal lane change leads to huge cocaine bust in Colorado

Found in trunk of car, 100 kilograms of cocaine worth $10 million on the street.

A number of lessons to be learned here: if smuggling drugs in Colorado, stay cool, drive safely, have a valid driver's licence and have a plausible story for the police if you are stopped.

A California couple was stopped for a routine traffic violation in Colorado, only to reveal that their rented car contained 220 pounds of cocaine worth $10 million on the street. Mark Bailey and Lisa Calderon of Sylmar, California were arrested in Pueblo, Colorado, on suspicion of cocaine possession. The police chief in Pueblo said it was the largest cocaine seizure in the departmen't history.

It started when the car, driven by Bailey, made an illegal lane change on Interstate 25, south of Denver. An off-duty detective tipped off a patrol officer. The road has long been a drug-smuggling corridor.

The patrol officer discovered that Bailey's licence had been revoked. He said that he was going to Iowa to buy a vintage car, but the policeman became suspicious when Calderon appeared nervous. She said they were going to visit a relative in Iowa, but couldn't say where exactly he lived.

Noticing that the rear of the car appeared weighted down, the officer summoned a sniffer dog, which reacted at the rear of the car. Searching the trunk, officers found four duffel bags stuffed with bricks of cocaine. The pair was arrested.

Bailey was also cited for driving without a licence and having no proof of insurance, charges that will no doubt weigh less heavily on him than the cocaine.
